What Matters More?
July 5, 2009
New Derek Webb song from Stockholm Syndrome
Lyrics:
You say you always treat people like you like to be
I guess you love being hated for your sexuality
You love when people put words in your mouth
‘Bout what you believe, make you sound like a freak
‘Cause if you really believe what you say you believe
You wouldn’t be so damn reckless with the words you speak
Wouldn’t silently conceal when the liars speak
Denyin’ all the dyin’ of the remedy
Tell me, brother, what matters more to you?
Tell me, sister, what matters more to you?
If I can tell what’s in your heart by what comes out of your mouth
Then it sure looks to me like being straight is all it’s about
It looks like being hated for all the wrong things
Like chasin’ the wind while the pendulum swings
‘Cause we can talk and debate until we’re blue in the face
About the language and tradition that he’s comin’ to save
Meanwhile we sit just like we don’t give a s—
About 50,000 people who are dyin’ today
Tell me, brother, what matters more to you?
Tell me, sister, what matters more to you?
Apparently the “s—” line was taken from Tony Campolo: “While you were sleeping last night, 30,000 kids died of starvation or diseases related to malnutrition. Second, most of you don’t give a s—. What’s more is that you’re more upset with the fact that I just said ’s—’ than the fact that 30,000 kids died last night.”
Rumored that the album hits stores September 1.
Online versions probably sooner.
I still have not formulated a true opinion on the matter yet.
Sincerely,
-AB
Last Tweet from @Ssyndrome: THE END. 07/07 THE BEGINNING.
Interesting!
I think i like it.
A couple lyrics changes (I think):
“wouldn’t silently *consent* when the liars speak”
“denying all the dying *or* the remedy”
Pre-orders actually begin tomorrow. With an immediate digital download.
That is awesome news Shane! Thank you for the update!
I can’t believe all the problems he’s having with his label over this one. I promise you it’s not because he says the “s” word, but because he tells Christians to love homosexuals and do something about people dying of hunger everyday. For some reason saying “love gays” is a dirtier phrase to some Christians than the “s” word. I don’t even think Derek was so-much saying “homosexuality is okay” as he’s saying “we’ve got bigger things to worry about.” People need to listen to this song. I hope the rest of the album is this good.
screw the nintendo rock-postal service-electronica
how’s he gonna do this stuff live?
lyrics are ok…no problem’s here…but i don’t want to see him holding a microphone bobbing around singing this stuff…no one’s gonna be able to take him seriously.
go back to folk derek and then i’ll try to consider you’re lyrics and opinions
ok
i’m listening to the record now.
it’s cool.
This from the guy that has that wierd doubler effect on his first single from his first solo album. (Which is an awesome song, but I think it falls in the “pot-kettle-black” area.) All in love, homie.
Okay, having heard the whole album, gotta say I don’t really like it…I LOVE IT. Good stuff. “Freddie Please” is an instant classic, “Black Eye” just sounds cool, and I love the message of “Becoming a Slave.” Good stuff indeed.
